Unpack: to explain or examine something in order to make its meaning clearer.

Welcome to my blog which is centered around the late internet personality, life coach and image consultant, Kevin R. Samuels – may he rest in peace! Mr. Samuels, who I may refer to as Kevin or as he was respectfully known as the Godfather, was quite the controversial one! He often asked, “what is controversial – the truth?” Despite his critics and detractors, The Godfather stood bold, flat-footed, and unyielding! This blog is intended to unpack the curriculum content that Mr. Samuels so passionately taught, to navigate through the “controversy” and get to what he considered “the truth”. Kevin’s content was like academic lessons and his content – his platform – was like going to school!

I will say this right off the bat…I am a Kevin Samuels fan! I have taken the time to listen to hours upon hours of his content [not just the salacious clips], from the beginning intro music to his customary closing, “Until next time – peace, we are out!” Kevin was masterful at clearly articulating what needed to be said. [His content certainly needs no clarifying.] He did not bite his tongue, nor did he stutter; and he certainly did not waver in his mission to improve the dynamics of male-female relationships in the black community.

Kevin often said that it was not going to be the men that effected change by speaking to women, but women – more specifically, older women speaking to younger women. As an older woman, I was open-minded enough to in good faith listen to Kevin’s videos from beginning to end, eat the meat and throw out the bones! Samuels never said that he was 100% correct on everything that he said. He actually said, “nothing is absolute”! As I consume his messages, though, rarely do I come across bones that need tossing!

Not only will I be unpacking and sharing Kevin’s content, but I will also unpack and share other medium related to the topics that he spoke on, i.e., gender roles, the church, dating/marriage tips, health & wellness, etiquette, femininity, self-awareness and so much more! I love us black women and I love our black men; but, for some reason we just can’t seem to get it together – work together! Every other race of people have found a way to get together, stay together, and work together! Why not us? We need our black men, and they need us! We as a people need deep introspection, honesty, and self-awareness! Kevin’s messages allowed me to be honest and reflect on my own past and understand why I made some of the decisions that I made – some good and some not so good.

According to a New York Times article after his passing, “Describing himself as an image consultant, Mr. Samuels had transformed in recent years from a personal stylist into a social media celebrity who built his following on an image of plain-spoken, hypermasculine authority, usually wearing a finely tailored suit. The approach brought him more than a million followers on both YouTube and Instagram, and many of his supporters viewed him as taking courageous stands for what they called traditional values.” This is why I’ve decided to take on this charge – to continue Kevin’s legacy and mission of standing for traditional values and saying to black women, it’s time for us to get it together so that we can get the outcomes we say we want!

Even if a relationship is not the end goal, we can work on being better versions of ourselves for ourselves! The time is now! I don’t propose to have all the answers to what are undoubtedly complex issues, and I don’t propose to change the world; but if just one person benefits from what I share, I’m good! It’ll be worth the effort! Let’s go!
